Underwater Camera Saved - July 2010

Leak Insure Saves Top Photographers Camera ...
Absorbent sachets to protect your housing in case of flood.

Dr Alex Mustard trained and worked as a marine biologist, but since 2004 has worked full time as a professional underwater photographer and author.

I recently sent some samples of our Leak Insure sachets to Alex so he could review them for us. Niether we or Alex expected them to be used in anger during the review, but we were wrong.

This year I am experimenting with a very large dome port for split-level photos. But despite having months for the build, it was only finished the day before the shoot and it didn’t fit on my housing properly, leaking slightly, but consistently. I taped the seals up the best I could and put all the sachets I had in the housing as insurance. It stayed dry all the time, until the final afternoon on Lundy Island (UK), when it started to leak. I got out immediately the leak alarm went off and found the housing and camera almost dry, but the sachets expanded, suggesting a leak of a couple of more than 100ml (third of a coke can). The camera was totally safe

Mini Review - Leak Insure ...
Absorbent sachets to protect your housing in case of flood.

Dr Alex Mustard underwater photographer, marine biologist and author, recently reviewd Leak Insure Sachets for the excellent Wetpixel website, below is his summary, if you would like to read the full review follow the link below.

"So in summary, Leak Insure works well and is inexpensive. And they are less embarrassing and fibrous (could leave hairs on o-ring) than the alternative product. At present they are available in the UK (£15 GBP for a pack of 20 – but you should only need 1 or 2) It is a flood insurance we can all afford and may save you from a cocktail of salt water and Japanese electronics, which will always leave a sour taste in the mouth".

LEAK INSURE ABSORBENT SACHETS

£14.99 PACK OF 20

SEVERAL YEARS ago, underwater photographer Mark Webster gave me an invaluable tip - tape a tampon to the inside of my camera housing. I can remember his words very clearly: They will save all but the worst of floods.'

Leak Insure has come up with a similarly absorbent solution in the form of sachets.

About the size of a teabag, these sachets can be wedged into the smallest of voids; several can be packed inside larger housings. We found that they could hold about 40ml of sea water - that's over two tablespoons per sachet. The gel absorbs water quite slowly so would stem a dripping leak quite well, but, as with the tampon solution, won't prevent a catastrophic failure. If you have a housing, put a couple of these inside - at less than £1 each, they're probably the best way to save a camera from a small leak.
